The Proof is in the Squirrel

Even if you’ve been living under a rock, if that rock is within 100 miles of St. Louis you’re familiar with the rally squirrel. He’s the furry little miracle that has not only become the new face (and tail) of the St. Louis Cardinals, but also the fastest growing commodity this side of the Gateway Arch.
Case and point: Crown Candy Kitchen. From gathering dust on the back shelf, the neglected chocolate squirrel mold has quickly become a golden ticket for the iconic St. Louis candy shop who’s been selling 40 or 50 a day at $11 a pop.
Case and point: Johnnie Brock’s. Not much demand for giant squirrel costumes over the years…until now. After going out of stock back in early October, the costume store has gotten wise and ordered dozens more in hopes that Squirrelmania will last through the Halloween season.
But it’s not all about the corporations cashing in. SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center was able to raise $210,000 for a new playground thanks to their squirrel-inspired merchandise that sold like hotcakes on a cold day.
And due to a complete lack of copyright, this little critter is fair game to anyone with a friend in the t-shirt or mold-making business.
The lesson? As long as the Cardinals stay red hot, the squirrel will bring in the bounty. And if you haven’t hopped on the bandwagon yet…you’re just plain nuts.
